What sacrifices have you made in life?

“Never gamble what you can’t afford to lose, and don’t chase your losses. If you lost them, they weren’t meant to be yours. That said, I do like eating meals and having the ability to pay for them when situations require that, so regretting losses does come up despite my cool head.”

“How’s that sacrificing, exactly? You’re gaming for money; you havta know there’s going to be losing mixed in there.”

“Mr. Jaxon, I assure you I never count on losing being part of the equation. There are simply suboptimal winning situations. Such as, when the house wins and I do not. There’s always a winner in these things, just not always myself. Which I dare say is very suboptimal. For me, at least.”

“Yeah, but they’re specifically asking about sacrificing something…”

“Now we’re in agreement. Me not winning a game of chance is very costly. First, my professional reputation is at stake, quite literally. What do they call a gambler who loses more than they win?”

“Dead ass broke?”

“Succinctly so, my friend. Also, lots of other phrases that once they stick to you, the hungry eyes you get set upon your person when settling down to a friendly card game, well, let’s say you have something to prove then. So, best view things as losing something unneeded. That way you are freed up to claim what comes to you next.”

“Well, that’s not a terrible way of looking at it, I suppose.”
(James and Jo’jaxon met in a casino, and developed a bit of a banter as I was writing them. Jo often is the straight shooter of the pair, and James steadfast in his adaptability. And raw greed. So they’re a blast to pair up for misadventures.)
