“I should have left so much earlier. When.. oh this is hard. When he left me there, I trusted he would come back. I trusted that I was worth coming back for. I.. guess I wasn’t.”
(Alastrina is leading a ragtag group of would-be adventurers on a quest they got ditched for being, well, ragtag adventurers)

“Looking back, I can’t help but feel foolish about all the time I wasted, waiting, but when I trusted that things would change, each day didn’t feel like, well, the waste they turned out to be. I believed in our quest, and I believed that I was still helping with it. That, I mattered. Not to him, that’s not what it was about. That I mattered enough to be part of something important.”
“Oh gods, this is hard. Why did I choose to answer this one? Jo and James have a rivalry going on for attention; surely they should have their turn in the spotlight? No? Well, I suppose I started this, and I need to finish it. Which, in a way, was what made me take action, as late in coming as it was.”
“So one day I did decide that I mattered enough to make a change. I had set out to help the world, to right the wrongs in it, and that I could be part of whatever efforts that I found myself joining to do exactly that. So, despite the Hero never coming back to collect me from that inn he stashed me in, I left to pick up on that quest. Which, I suppose became my quest. Funny, I never had envisioned I would lead anybody, let alone take a group with me on something important. Maybe that is for the best, too; if I had seen myself doing it, I never would have allowed myself to do it. The gods had a plan for me, and in Their planning, They knew not to tip me off, it would seem.”
“It still hurts, though. I’m not the only one The Hero treated in this way, but maybe because I was the only one of us who picked back up on it after.. being abandoned, the others look to me as something special. I wish I felt that way; I try very hard to be the person they see me as. Maybe one day I’ll see it like they do..”
I am *this* close to a working prototype of the game part of my book/game hybrid, yeee!
